Motor Caravan Registration

DVLA classifies vans as Motor Caravans (M2/M3) if they meet specific requirements:
• Permanently installed seats/dining (for 4+ people)
• Cooking facility (hob or microwave)
• Sleeping accommodation (bed or convertible)
• Storage (cupboards, wardrobes, etc.)
• At least one side window

DVLA Process

  1. Complete conversion to motor caravan spec
  2. Get photos showing all required features
  3. Submit V5C form to DVLA with photos
  4. Wait 4-6 weeks for processed V5C
  5. Tax changes automatically (£165/year for vans, £180/year for motor caravans)

UK MOT Rules for Motor Caravans

Once registered as motor caravan:
• MOT exempt for first 3 years (matches cars)
• No annual Class 7 MOT (light goods vehicle)
• Standard Class 4 MOT after 3 years (cheaper, more lenient)

Insurance Implications

Emissions and ULEZ

UK clean air zones: London ULEZ (daily charge £12.50 for non-compliant), Birmingham, Bath, Bristol, Manchester, Sheffield, Newcastle.
• Pre-Euro 6 diesel: Charge applies in ULEZ
• Petrol: pre-2006 typically non-compliant
• Euro 6 diesel: Compliant

Parking and Overnight Stays

• England/Wales: No specific law against sleeping in vehicles (no road obstruction)
• Scotland: "Right to Roam" gives extra freedom (landowner permission preferred)
• Local bylaws: Some councils prohibit overnight parking (e.g., Brighton, parts of Cornwall)
• Private land: Always get permission

Speed Limits

Vans (up to 3.05 tonnes gross): 70mph dual carriageway, 60mph single, 50mph built-up.
Motor caravans (over 3.05 tonnes): 60mph dual, 50mph single, 30mph built-up.
