UK Winter Challenge

UK winters bring -10°C temperatures with strong winds. Alpine van life requires comprehensive heating to survive comfortably. Choose your solution based on fuel availability and climate protection.

Heating Options Compared

• Propane Engine Heater (Truma) - £400-£600. Most popular UK choice. Combines heating + hot water. Requires propane bottle (£15-£20 refill). Noise level: 40dB
• Electric Heater (Eberspächer) - £500-£800. 12V or 240V. Silent operation, cleaner. Often fitted in factory-converted vans. Requires battery or alternator supply.
• Hybrid System - £800-£1,200. Propane main + electric backup. Popular for longer UK trips.
• Swarm Heater - £200-£350. Cost-effective, good for moderate UK climates. Rumbler design (limited cabin heating). Works well with 12v systems.

Heating Power Requirements

UK van size 6m×2.5m (15m²): 1.5kW per degree temperature difference. At 0°C outside, want 20°C inside: 30kW × 4 hours = 120kWh daily. Propane: 10kg cylinder = 9,000kWh.

Installation Notes

• Install in low space to avoid floor heating
• Proper ventilation is non-negotiable (poisonous CO gas)
