Pre-Build Planning

Purchase base van with service history
HPI check completed (no finance, stolen, write-off)
Final layout design drawn to scale
Budget spreadsheet created with 20% contingency
Conversion insurance quote obtained
Check if planning permission needed (usually not for internal)
All major parts sourced and price-checked
Required tools purchased/borrowed
Workspace secured (garage, drive, unit)
DVLA notified of intended conversion (V5C update later)

During Build

Van stripped, cleaned, rust treated
Sound deadening applied to floor/walls
insulation-installed"> Insulation installed with vapour barrier
Electrical rough-in (cables, conduit, fuse box)
Plumbing rough-in (water tanks, pipes)
Roof vent(s) and windows installed
Interior framing complete
Walls and ceiling panels fitted
Subfloor and finish flooring installed
Furniture built and secured
Electrical finish (outlets, lights, switches)
Plumbing finish (sink, tap, shower, toilet)
Gas installation certified (if applicable)
Heating system installed and tested
Soft furnishings, curtains, decor complete

Post-Build Compliance

DVLA V5C updated to Motor Caravan
MOT booked (Class 4 for motor caravan)
Specialist insurance policy active
Road tax updated to motor caravan rate
Smoke alarm and CO detector fitted
Fire extinguisher mounted and accessible
First aid kit stocked
Weighbridge visit - check GVW
Gas Safe certificate obtained (if gas)
Electrical installation certificate

Pre-Trip Essentials

Tyre pressure and tread checked
Oil, coolant, brake fluid, screenwash topped up
Leisure and starter battery voltage checked
Fresh water tank filled and system primed
Grey water tank emptied
Cassette toilet emptied and chemicals added
Gas bottles secured, regulator checked
Fridge pre-cooled 24hrs before departure
All items secured for travel
Windows and roof vents closed/locked
Route planned with overnight stops
Navigation, parking, weather apps ready
Emergency kit packed (warning triangle, hi-vis, etc.)
Documents: V5C, insurance, MOT, driving licence
